The green layer of the interior of the MÂY HOUSE bistro

The main assumption of the project was to create a coherent and harmonious concept of greenery arrangement, maintaining the repeatability of elements on each floor of the building. To this end, we took care of a thoughtful selection of plant species and pots, focusing on minimalist models made of concrete and wood in neutral colors.

The requirement was to underline the designed interior and make it cozier. Greenery was already taken into account at the visualization level. Even though the client and the design studio gave us free rein, we set our own planting conditions. It was necessary to choose greenery that:

  1. 1
does not protrude into the space of the bench,
  2. 2
    2. does not suffer from excessive moisture from the leaves, dissolved minerals could damage upholstered or wooden elements,
  3. 3
we also wanted to use mainly plants that grow in clumps and cannot be easily propagated vegetatively - we sometimes encounter the fact that visitors degrade greenery in public places by cutting and tearing them off.

The restaurant has a capacity of 90 people. This means that there is more than one planted plant per visitor. We planted 100 plants in two containers over 5 m long on two floors. Thanks to the good natural light conditions, we were able to select interesting foliage from the genera Anthurium, Dieffenbachia, Ctenanthe or Strelitzia. We supported the plants by planting them in our substrate mixes that meet specific requirements.

We avoid using mineral substrate, which would not even be suitable here due to the high load on the furniture solution. So we used an organic substrate, applied our organic fertilizer Kvítka v bytě and inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi Kvítka v bytě, which help plants in case of stress situations (such as lack of water, malnutrition). The client also installed an LED strip for the effect on the border of the bench and the planting, which helps the plants improve the light conditions.

The greenery in the bistro subtly regulates the acoustics, the space feels less empty even during off-peak hours, and the plants from the entrance to the back area create a consistent, pleasant mood. In addition, many people are drawn to plants. They like to sit near them, look at them. We must not forget that the background formed by a continuous wall of greenery is a photogenic corner for visitors who can share the environment.

The implementation itself in 2022 was one of our most successful plantings to date. At the time, the client did not want regular maintenance, so there were not many of the original plants that we planted and he had a large part of them restored. Nevertheless, our goal is to plant conceptually designed spaces in which plants are given an equal place as architecture and breathe their own life, which the design studio POSTROP did very well with this project!
